Scenes From A Snowpocalypse: 2016 Edition

Last weekend the east coast was blessed with a major snow storm.

Tho we didn't get as much snow as many places, my home town here in western North Carolina got what is considered, at least by local standards, a crap-ton of snow.

Estimates vary, but I measured 8" in the untouched snow in my back yard right after the last snow fall.  For a town that has one snow plow, and stores that rarely stock snow shovels, that is a hefty amount.

The storm started on Friday. Since snow is rare in these parts, I took the day off work so I could go out and experience the fluffy white stuff in all its glory.  I ended up walking 9 miles over two days. These are some of the photos I took along the way.

Let's start with a shot of Zach's Fork Creek, which runs behind my house.

I walked downtown to check out the frosty streets.  This was taken from the middle of the road at the main square in town.
This is one of the larger churches in town (which, being in the south, is saying something).
This is the church I attend, First Presbyterian Church.
On the right side of the photo above is a courtyard that contains a cemetery...
... and a garden.
The church was the farthest I wandered from home.  On the way back I explored more of the downtown area.
One of the main features of the rather small downtown is the Thomas Sayre sculpture called Across The Grain.
The sun went down on the way home, so I took one last shot of yet another church illuminated by a street light reflecting off the snow.
Most of the snow is gone now, but for a while this town was a winter wonderland, and that was a Good Thing(tm).

Snowpocalypse Sunset: Empire Edition

Day two of the Snowpocalypse 2016.  The storm has passed, but the snow remains.  This was the view as I walked around my neighbourhood this evening.

Snowpocalypses are pretty, at times.

Oh, also, guess what movie I watched while posting this...

Selfie: Snowpocalypse Edition

... that time I was standing under a bridge in a "monster blizzard" taking self portraits, ya know, as one does.
I was all alone under that bridge, so I set the camera on a tripod, racked it out to 200mm to get that sweet, sweet lens compression, stood 10ft in front of it in the falling snow, and posed.  I used my camera as a remote trigger.

Ain't technology fun?

Bridge Demolition

Fun fact:  I took pictures of the Broadway Bridge (pictured below) in Saskatoon Saskatchewan this summer.  I just found out today that it was demolished yesterday (link to video).

So much for any plans to return to reshoot, eh?

Caught In The Act: A Photographer In His Element

Last night I was digging thru my photo archives to do some spring cleaning, when I came across this photo of Yours Truly.  I am taking a picture of a rather friendly cow on the Uetliberg near Zurich Switzerland, back in May 2015 (story is here.)

The photo was taken by my co-worker and hiking buddy +Joel Ebel.

If you are curious, the view from my lens look like this:

(if she looks familiar, I posted her as a Wordless Wednesday post in October 2015).

It is fun to see a scene from both sides of the camera, eh?

Cheers!
